If SAO was the initial Arc, and was the length of FMA:Brotherhood with the same depth of character development and pseudo ideas about the evils of humanity, this anime would be gold.
It makes an attempt to highlight the evils of humanity, but falls short of reasons why those evils exist. Instead just makes the villains out to be all sociopaths.
Wait, it was trying to highlight evils in humanity? I didn't get that vibe in the least. I don't think SAO was trying for any symbolism or deepness
The deepness they were going for was on a light level, the reason it was hard to follow. There are few actual villains in the series.

Kuradeel started off good until he was given the opportunity to take advantage of Kirito. The idea here is that these villains would never actually be criminals in the real world and that once inside the game with no limits act upon their desires. It mirrors our world in that people are completely different online than they are in the real world sometimes.

When was Kuradeel ever good? Maybe it was just in the light novel, but in the anime, he was possessive of Asuna from the beginning and was at the very best a jerk(at worst, a creepy stalker). It wasn't that he was given a chance to take advantage of Kirito's weakness, it was that he was an undercover Laughing Coffin.

Someone closer is Rosalia, who I remember saying something like not knowing for sure that killing someone in the game actually killed them(might be remembering wrong)

I absolutely love this anime. I can understands everyones criticisms about the second half after Aincrad but I think it prompted some interesting conceptual details to think about. For me personally, I thought it was bittersweet but done well. Like I imagine most fans would've loved if the first arc ended there or was just extended a bit in between, but like I said I enjoyed it.

I finished SAOII not long ago and I felt it was just as good if not better than the first. I think every guy can or wants to connect with Kirito and fans love seeing everything that happens with him and the characters but for me I found Asuna much more interesting. I love Kirito but everything about Asuna and her character development intrigued me. I loved GGO, but Mothers Rosario was brilliant in it's own right. The Excalibur Arc I feel was sort of a filler but it was a decent transition between arcs, short enough that it didn't seem too redundant or unnecessary. I feel like that Arc will be more important later on maybe. Their will definitely be more SAO I think as they foreshadowed more to come. I'm excited about that.

I love this series, I love everything conceptually it brings. The connections it makes to real life vs VR and personal issues among old and new characters is fantastic for me personally. I really enjoyed it. It gets so much hate and I think it's unnecessary.
